Owyn Nelmes

Our Jockey!

Owyn Nelmes

Born 02.06.84

Owyn has gone from showing in-hand at the age of 5 to hunter trialing at the age of 6. He has come up through the ranks of hunting, team chasing etc having his first point to point ride on 16th birthday, but due to foot and mouth the following year he had to wait for his first winner. Owyn attended the British Racing School and carried on his progression from the picture on right (Twyford Starlight - first Hunter Trial - 1990)

Top Novice Rider - South Dorset Pt:Pt

Owyn went on to be amateur jockey for Mr R H Buckler, Melplash where he was allowed to pursue his love for Point to Point and gain experience in riding for other people and his trainer.

Here he gained his Amateur B status after a lot of hard work and persistence. The picture on left shows Owyn riding Mrs T Bathers Eurolinkhellraiser at South Dorset Pt:Pt - 2nd in Hunt Members and with other rides on that day he managed to gain Top Novice Rider for Hunt.

Winners

The first win is always the best and this was achieved at the age of 17 on his own horse Ok So. He shared OK So with his Mother Helen and  who was trained by his Dad Ken so you could say it was meant to be.

Owyn went on to ride his first winner under rules for Louise Cunningham at Huntingdon the same season giving her her first winner as a trainer.

Summer fun was had by riding Arabs on the flat - one ride - one winner with more to come!

Owyn's love is National Hunt and Point to Point. For somebody so young without a big backer his race record is good - three 1st's, four 2nd's and five 3rd's. He has now gone on to go freelance riding for other people and working for Mr David Elsworth.

Owyn can be contacted through us or on 07721 425206. He is pictured on the right on Ok So, going to post Folkestone, finishing 2nd in the Hunter Chase.

The Boss

The jockey is only as good as the horse he or she is riding, so without the dedication and hard work of dad Ken, who is in charge of the Point to Pointers at the Stud, Owyn would not be where he is today.

Ken has been training Point to Pointers now for 15 years. Some of those as rider / trainer / owner, but with the help of Anthony Honeyball he trained his first winner in 2000 - One Boy - the horse he bought for Owyn to start his career.

Ken is known for his relentless hard work, but can always be found jolly and happy, getting his horses fit (but the staff do most of the walking exercise!). As an ex Point to Point jockey hiself, his love for the game is now beginning to pay off with the loyal support of wonderful owners.

The team would not be complete without Helen to do the paperwork, turning out, feeding, the general back-up needed with the horses and of course the lorry driver.

OWYN GETS AN AGENT

With things moving on so fast in his life it was time to get an agent.  He was very lucky to be recommended by Richie Young to Russ James, from Maltern, North Yorkshire who has many of the top jockeys on his books.  You can contact Russ on 01653 699466 or mobile 07947 414001.

Russ and Owyn got off to a flying start when Russ got Owyn the ride on End of an Era at Market Raisen where the little mare came good and won.  The partnership has gone from strength to strength, with this little mare now owned by Mrs E Slack, who has backed Owyn on other horses as well.

On the advice of Owyn's guvnor Mr David Elsworth, he moved up North to Mrs M Reveley to become her amateur jockey for the season, hoping that with her and Russ's backing he could go for the Amateur Championship.

AMATEUR TITLE

Owyns chase for the amateur title started with a ride for Mr M Chapman on End of an Era in a selling hurdle which he carried on to win.

From that meeting at Market Raisen he moved up to Mrs Reively's, getting a lift with their stable jockey Alan Dempsey leaving mum and my brother to drive home alone. This was a big move for the whole family. The North was a long way from home, but very good to him, offering the chance to ride the super horse Overstrand, then owned by the F F Racing Services Partnership.  Owyn went on to win twice and had a fantastic partnership.

At Mrs Reively's he managed to ride his first ever double on the 13 March 2004 on My Line and Maceo, at Ayr. Owyn rode two more winners for Mrs Reively, but he has to thank the man who bought End of an Era out of the seller. Mr A Slack, booked him to ride the little mare from there on and they went on to win three more races.  Owyn also rode other winners for them and they were great supporters.

Other trainers that helped Owyn, giving him winners and who deserve a lot of thanks for helping him to win the title are - Mr J E Dixon, Mrs H O Graham, Mrs A M Norton, Mrs S Bradburn, Mr C Bealby and Mr D Burchell.

There is one horse that actually won Owyn the amateur title, trained by A Crook and owned by John Sinclair Haulage Ltd - Pornic became his true friend, winning twice for him and the last time being a week before the end of the title, in which Owyns friend and rival, Nick Williams was running too close for comfort, but all the work paid off he won the Amateur Title.

Warmwell Racing is launched

TIME TO GO PROFESSIONAL

While winning the Amateur Title Owyn rode a winner for Oliver Sherwood at Hereford - Musmaor in a selling hurdle beating top jockey AP McCoy.

Owyn'a agent advised that Oliver would like him, to join his yard, so off he went to Lambourne.  The season started wonderfully well as he settled into Oliver's.  All the staff are great and everyone supports each other.

Owyn's first winner as a conditional, was for P Rodford at Newton Abbot on Silver Pot Black.  He felt for his first year as a conditional, the season has gone well and two horses really stand out that he would like to thank: Mr P A Pritchard and the great Follow the Flow who he won on four times in the season; and: The govenor and Mr Andrew Cohen for giving him the chance on Kausse de Thaxi, a super young horse that he hope to get chance to sit on again.  Owyn rode six winners for his yard and he would like to thank all the outside trainers and owners who supported him.  This summer he has managed to ride two winners for Neil King and hopes this partnership carries on.  He is more than happy at Oliver's and hope that the partnership and friendships he has developed on the yard, follow on for many years.

He knows life will get harder now, as he has riden from a 7lb claim, down to 3lb in one season.
